Don Howard was a Radarman and took this photo while anchored off Nome Alaska for a little "liberty". Don notes
that this part of Alaska is mostly cloudy for about 350 days a year. It was the same this day but as they approached Nome
the weather cleared and became beautifuly sunny. When they left it became cloudy again. The locals thought they brought the
sunny weather with them.
While I was aboard her motto was "No Ka Oi" or number one. I guess it is still true!

Yours truly and our son Rick on the flight deck of the CGC Mellon 1975. He was fortunate enough to be invited aboard for an
72 day Alaska Patrol. The ship was already underway so we flew him from Honolulu to Anchorage. The ship pulled into Seward
Alaska, I rented a car and picked him up at the airport. Once underway he was treated as part of the engineering crew and
stood watches throughout the ship. He was able to visit many remote islands in the Bering Sea and at 13 crossed the International
Date Line along with several other kids that were aboard. Dispite all this he still joined the Coast Guard when he was of
age and achieved MK2 before leaving the service.
