U.S. LIFESAVING STATION
(Golden Gate - San Francisco)
1890
This is showing the launching area with the Lifesaving Station in the background. Note the dutch windmill. My brother
and I used to play these in the 50's. There were two on either side of Golden Gate Park at the beach. Both have since been
removed.

SURFBOAT DRILL
Orleans U.S. Lifesaving Station
1908
A crew launches a lifeboat for surf drill at Orleans Livesaving Station (non-existent now) on the beach in vicinity of
Cape Cod, Mass., abreast of Ponchet Island. The men wear old cork type life belts. Kapok filler for life belts, not yet
in use in the United States, had been recommended that year before the Board of Lifesaving Appliances.
Established about 1873, Orleans Station was then under the U.S. Lifesaving Service which later was merged with the U.S.
Revenue Cutter Service to form the U.S. Coast Guard in 1915. While the two Services were separated, however, officers of
the Revenue Cutter Service formulated the plans for surf drills and discipline of lifesaving station crews, and conducted
periodical inspections of the station. (USCG)

SURFBOAT DRILL
Oleans Lifesaving Station
1908
It took skillful, daring surfmen to man lifesaving stations. Constant boat drill kept the crews fit for rescue of lives
from shipwrecks, capsized boats, and other offshore distresses. Here the crew from Orleans Lifesaving Station on the coast
of Massachusetts in the vicinity of Cape Cod exercises and lay on the oars in surf drill. (USCG)
