GRUMMAN J2F
Antarctic October 7, 1947
All the above photos were taken by former USCGC NORTHLAND crewman Mr. Joe Holoubek and submited by Lt Grant Spooner USCGR
(ret). I suspect they were all taken about the same time.
According to the note attached: It is a pre-war design and replaced the earlier designs that were "stick and fabric"
construction. The Duck is all metal and the landing gear was retractable info the float. It had a Wright 1820 (variations
say 65 or 102) and I think it was a double row of 7 cylinders each, i.e. 14 cylinders. It did have a rear cockpit, but some
had it covered over. There is room below the cockpit for few others in the section of the float support, such as rescued
sailors or downed aircrew. There are actually windows and a door in the float support. The insignia blue circle with a white
star is an early WWII marking, before adding the blue and white bars on each side of the blue circle. The red dot was removed
from the center of the star so as not to be a target, nor to be mistaken for a Japanese red "meatball". If the
Duck was not catapulted from the ship it was lowered into the water by a crane.
