SHIP FIRE
July 16, 1962

The contributor does not remember the name of the ship but it is close to the rock jetty for Southwest pass Mississippi River. Along with the two tugs assisting can be seen CG82311 (later renamed POINT VERDE).

BEAR

MARCH 19, 1963



The former U.S. Coast Guard cutter BEAR on her last voyage just before sinking 90 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia March 19, 1963. The tough, one-time sealing vessel and icebreaker had defied crunching ice in 45 Arctic voyages and twice took Admiral Richard E. Byrd to the Antarctic.

The vessel, built in 1874, was being towed from Halifax to Philadelphia where it was to be converted into a floating restaurant and museum. USCG)
