c 1953 Sometimes it just doesn't pay to get out of bed in the morning! This boat was out of Gloucester, NJ. It seems that the BM was going full bore in a fog at night and hit a pier. Luckily the only injuries sustained were a couple of broken ribs and one arm. The sailor in the photo is unidentified but with his smile I doubt he was part of the crew. ______________________________________________________________

CG-40408
Taken at Cape May NJ. Does anyone know why the .30 caliber on the bow? Received an answer today (3/15/08) from former BM3 Jack Singerling who stated "The CG40408 had the 30 cal on the bow, because the personal station at the moorings at cape may were going to the firing range just off the beach of the coast guard base, to fire the gun at a 55 gallon drum painted white in the water. We had belts loaded with two ap to one tracer. We started from a distance of about one hundred yards, we did hit and sink the drum from about twenty-five yards. The picture was taken between 1961 and 1962. hope this helps, I was stationed at the moorings from about 1960 to 1963". Thanks Jack. ________________________________________________________________

CG-40534 Utility Boat
This was a spare boat at Group Woods Hole. This was used when one of the 44MLB's was in the yards at the Group. This boat was for use on the Stage Harbor side. Chatham has two sides. The fish Pier side which has the Chatham Bar location and the other (around Monomoy Island). The Stage Harbor side is where a UTB could be used for SAR. It took a Period of 2 hours to switch sides with a boat but the fish pier side always required a Motor Life Boat. Thanks for the description Bill. ____________________________________________________________
