SSS POINT WEBER
Cruising the San Joaquin River (CA) 2003
Here is a photo for all you 82 footer buffs. She is a Sea Scout vessel out of Stockton CA and was built by the Coast
Guard Yard in Baltimore MD specifically for the U.S. Navy in 1962!
While in Navy service she was used as a firing range vessel on the west coast (Port Hueneme?). The boat would patrol
a firing range at sea to keep boaters out of harm's way while the navy tested various weapons. After testing was complete,
the vessel would retrieve any expended weapons still floating with a "Sea Crane" mounted on her stern. While in
Sea Scout Service this crane has proven very useful with such applications as helping repair docks, retrieving debris from
the Delta waterways, helping repair other Sea Scout vessels and probably most important for launching and retrieving their
tender. I have heard that it also makes a pretty nice rope swing during swim call!
